Matariki (the Māori New Year) is a time for feasting and being with whānau family and friends.

The reappearance of the Matariki star cluster coincided with the end of the harvest season for many iwi (tribes). The pātaka (food storehouses) were full, so less work was needed in the gardens, freeing up time for family and leisure.
