Sanja Matsuri (三社祭) means "three shrine festival", and it is one of the BIGGEST festivals in Tokyo that takes place around Sensoji Temple in Asakusa. TONS of traditional music and parading, yummy STREET FOOD, and many, many people!
In fact, over the course of this 3-day festival, over 2 million people visit Asakusa to see the festivities! There are 44 districts that make up the Asakusa neighborhood, and each district has a shrine (called mikoshi) that they parade around to Sensoji Temple to receive a Shinto blessing. They then parade the shrine back home to bring good luck for everyone there.
The festival is to celebrate the 3 founders of the Sensoji Temple back in the 7th century. Everyone gets involved, including children, and some foreigners! It's a fun time for everyone to come out and see all the action, and EAT EAT EAT all the yummy festival foods that are available.
